THE STATE: DEPRESSION

I happen to have an adorable friend (name with-held) schooling in the University of Lagos (UNILAG) who happened to have visited me at a time and after a couple chat-ups of getting to know each other, she spoke about her brother.

my brother happened to encounter a gang
In school ...(cutting the long story short)...
He refuses to get initiated and so was attacked by diabolic means through
Food poisoning and ever since that day, he got psychotic.
Brought him back home with a couple sessions at the psychiatric hospital, got better
But now he ‘drifts’.”

Well, truthfully speaking I took the story as one of those pitiful stories some girl brews up just to have you get all mushy-mushy (no-offense) LOL but it got quite serious when she hit me up on Whatsapp with pictures alongside.

Here is how it came through;

“Noticed changes in his mood so i told my elder brother who shares same room with him
To watch him closely and he confirmed same .
The scary part was taking note of some depressive pictures he used as his
Social networking display picture (as shown below after the cut).
Its been disturbing and i just cant concentrate during lectures. I just need my brother to
Be okay, that’s all I ask”

Creepy Images used as display pictures at different times within 24hrs.

I called up a Doctor friend of mine way back in the University of Benin (UNIBEN) - Dr. George Bemighoes Edeh who happens to have worked in one of the top profound psychiatric hospitals. He spoke calmly and in few words, i understood calmly the “negative power of depression”.

Yea, you can say that's where I got the inspiration from to write this article but then I thought, “ What if there were others out there who had the same issue and have no one to talk to nor advise them?” or “People who would love to share the story of a loved one passing through the stage of depression or they themselves but are scared to be mocked rather than get help?”

Here dear reader(s) is my views...

Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can a persons thoughts, behavior, feelings and sense of well-being. People with depression may get to loose interest in pleasurable activities they once loved, experience either loss of appetite or overeating (human body differs), lack concentration, remembering unnecessary details or making certain decisions at times relating to suicide or dark alley innovations.

Depressed mood may either be a form of psychiatric disorder in most cases while in rare ones. They come due to life experiences such as grief or when the individual encounters an incident and is traumatized or better still stigmatized from the memory.

Depression is the most common mental disorder and fortunately, depression is actually treatable. A combination of “therapy” and “antidepressant medication” can help ensure recovery.
