LAST NIGHT IN EDEN [Episode 4]

"I won't mince words with you nne, 'Aunty Ify began as she kneaded the dough thoroughly on the board ' I'm not exactly happy with you".

"I thought we had gone past this Aunty Ify" Doris murmured before she excused herself to go spit in the backyard.

"Even if your siblings have all lost their heads because of a few naira notes that man readily throws around and your father is being silent, aren't you concerned about yourself? Don't you wish for a man you can actually call your own?"

"Tekena married me,"

Aunty retorted as she furiously rinsed the frying pan."With his other wife still alive and breathing and oblivious of your existence, o alu,  it is an abomination. "

Doris was at a crossroad,  seven months pregnant for a married man who was actually starting to change her life. The spare land behind the house was under construction courtesy Tekena. She no longer lived in her studio apartment in school; a two bedroom flat in a GRA had her name on it, she had a car and a driver and her bank account was slightly losing shape. She liked him; what was not to like? Tekena was handsome for a man his age, rich and knew how to spoil a woman but she didn't love him. She just couldn't bring herself to love him; he was a liar and a cheat.

"Your phone is ringing", Aunty Ify shouted to be heard above the noise of flour and hot oil.

"Where did you keep your phone!" Tekena scolded over the phone.

"I was in the kitchen with..." Doris was stuttering.

"And so?!..."

And yes, she couldn't love him because he was overprotective; more like overbearing. four months into her pregnancy, he had yelled her at the airport just because she said she had to go pee before they boarded.

"Aunty, he's waiting at the gate, I have to get going" Doris muttered as she got up from the stool and adjusted her gown.

"Won't he come inside?"

"He says he's in a rush" Doris defended with her charming smile again.

He wasn't in a rush. Tekena was an egotistical bastard.

Doris was lonely. She stared at herself in her bathroom mirror. Twenty one and lonely.
Rita had found out her house and had come prepared; acid, gun and all. The woman was furious on seeing Doris heavily pregnant but for the intervention of security and neighbours, Doris would have been toast. So here she was in the United States with her two year old son in one of Tekena's mansions and lonely. She heard the door to her bedroom open.

" Breakfast is ready ma'am" She heard the cook say.

"Thanks Heather" Doris murmured as she sniffed to unclog her blocked nostrils. She missed Nigeria. She missed her life and like hell she missed her job.

Tekena came in to see she and Jordan whenever he deemed fit and ruled her life from Nigeria.  The deviant in her was slowly waking up. She wiped her tears swiftly and left the bathroom for her chest of drawers. After a little rummaging, she picked out her passport.

Fred was yelling like a banshee at one of the girls. She probably was new. She recognized the place even with her eyes closed; the dim lights and padded carpets, the sofas had been changed to more exotic colours. Doris could guess they were soft too. The place smelled of faint alcohol and Cuban and what else? Yes, sin. The place smelled of sin and Fred was staring at her.

" It's been two years but I'll still recognize those hips even with my eyes closed"

Doris shrieked with excitement as Fred lifted her off the ground in a hug.

"Fred!"

"That rich sonafagun took you away from me right?"

"You sold me, remember?"

"He offered a price too spicy to turn down" Fred added with a smirk.

"Shame on you" Doris scolded playfully as she hit Fred on the chest.

"He's been good to you? I need not ask, your skin is ruby. "

"It's been hell Fred,  I need my job back"

Fred asked , eyebrow raised " what on earth for?"

"not for the money. I just want to know that I haven't lost my touch"

"Doris..."

"Just for one night Fred. Please"

Fred couldn't say no to those wet puppy dog eyes staring at him.

"Fine, but we've got a new policy"

"Which is?"

"Every girl gets to wear a mask"

Doris snorted "are you serious?"

"Women visit here too these days." Fred whispered into Doris' ears before walking away to yell at another girl who wasn't getting the pole dance right.
